Michelle Wu is an American politician serving as the mayor of Boston, Massachusetts, since 2021. As a member of the Democratic Party, Wu was the first woman and first non-white mayor of Boston. She is considered a political progressive and a protégée of Elizabeth Warren. Warren was one of Wu’s professors in law school and Wu worked on Warren’s 2012 United States Senate campaign. Michelle Wu is married to Conor Pewarski and in this post, we will take a look at who her husband is. Let’s find out more below.

Michelle Wu Biography

Wu was born on January 14, 1985, in Chicago, Illinois, U.S. to Taiwanese Americans. She graduated from Barrington High School in 2003, where she was valedictorian. She also moved to the Boston area to attend college at Harvard University, where she graduated with a degree in economics in 2007.

After college, she worked as a consultant at the Boston Consulting Group. Unfortunately, she had to quit to care for her mother and two youngest siblings. Her mum at that stage was suffering from mental illness. To help, Wu started a teahouse business in the North Center neighbourhood of Chicago. In 2009, she returned to Massachusetts with her mother and youngest siblings to earn her J.D. from Harvard Law School. Wu eventually graduated from Harvard Law School in 2012.

Wu worked in Boston City Hall for Mayor Thomas Menino in the Office of Administration and Finance and later as a Fellow at the Rappaport Center in Law and Public Policy under Menino’s chief of staff, Mitch Weiss in 2010. Later in 2010, Wu graduated from Emerge Massachusetts, a training program for women who aspire to elected office.

Michelle Wu Political Career

Wu became the first Asian American to serve on the Boston City Council in January 2014. In late 2014, Wu became the first city councillor in Boston history to give birth while serving on the Boston City Council. From January 2016 to January 2018, she served as president of the council, the first woman of colour and the first Asian American to hold the role.

Michelle Wu was first elected to a Boston City Council at-large seat in November 2013. She finished in second place to incumbent Ayanna Pressley, with the top four finishers being elected to the council. Wu was re-elected in 2015, 2017, and 2019, placing second behind Pressley in 2015 and placing first in both 2017 and 2019. In the 2021 election, she decided not to seek a fifth term on the City Council and to run for mayor instead.

By September 2021, Wu was widely considered to be the front-runner in the nonpartisan primary election, with a significant polling lead. Wu ultimately placed first in the nonpartisan primary and advanced to the general election, where she faced fellow city council member Annissa Essaibi George.

Michelle Wu Apologizes For Wrong Email

A Wu administration official, on behalf of the mayor, mistakenly sent all Boston city councillors an email Tuesday inviting them to a holiday party that was meant exclusively for “electeds of colour,” prompting an apology and mixed reactions.

Denise DosSantos, the mayor’s director of City Council relations, told the body’s “honourable members” that, “on behalf of Mayor Michelle Wu,” she was cordially inviting each of them “and a guest to the Electeds of Color Holiday Party on Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at the Parkman House, 33 Beacon St.”

Approximately 15 minutes later, however, DosSantos sent out a follow-up email to city councillors, apologizing for the prior email, which was only meant for those who were invited. The body includes seven white councillors and six of colour.

Who is Michelle Wu’s husband, Conor Pewarski?

Michelle Wu started dating her current husband, Conor Pewarski while schooling at Harvard College. Before then, Conor was introduced to her by mutual friends at a Harvard-Yale football game party that she hosted.

After dating for a while, Pewarski proposed to Wu on December 7, 2011, at Cambridge Common and they were married on September 8, 2012. The two lovers are blessed with two children (boys). They are 9-year-old Blaise and 6-year-old Cass. Pewarski worked as a community lender at East Boston Savings Bank until resigning his position shortly after Wu took office as mayor.
